The Layla riff makes an awesome lesson of how cool a few simple elements become - when put together. Without getting too technical, we have...

...an open-string hammer-on and pull-off pattern...

...combined with a powerchord slide pattern...

...as well as an interesting bassline...

Who would have thought? Anyhow, these elements together,make the riff cool and catchy. You should try and see if you can isolate the elements, and let it inspire you to come up with something of your own ( doesn't have to be more sophisticated than an "inversed" version the same riff).
