SOLOS

In this section you will find guitar lessons dealing with "famous" solos and riffs from popular guitarists. The lessons contain video, tab and instruction, and are usually updated weekly.

Important: Since the lessons contain streaming video (not downloadable) they might take a while to load (with broadband up to five minutes), so please be patient...

Slash "Sweet Child of Mine " guitar lesson (29/8 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2

By popular request! This is a truly amazing guitar solo, analysed note for note with video... enjoy!

Slash - Michael Jackson "Give in to me" guitar lesson (1/8 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 3 4

This guitar solo serves as an excellent example for the beginner/intermediate guitarist on how to bend. You will also learn how to bend in pitch.

Brian May - Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody" solo

Go to part 1 2

Legendary guitarist Brian May showcases his melodic playing in this solo. Theorywise, he has a scalar approach, and the solo revolves around the C minor scale (C - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - Bb).
This solo should lend itself to the beginner/intermediate guitarist, as it only has one faster passage.

Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" solo

Go to part 1 2 3 Mr Knopfler mixes chicken picking, blues clichés, lightning fast arpeggios in this solo - all performed with his unmistakable tone and feel.

Randy Rhoads "Crazy Train" guitar lesson (7/10 - 2005)

Go to part 1 In this classic rock track, Randy Rhoads displays his timeless rock chops. Here you will learn some Van Halen style tapping, as well as some interesting whammy bar use. You will also get a taste of some Randy style speedlicks.

Steve Morse - Deep Purple "Vavoom" (Deep Purple) guitar lesson (17/10 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 3 The solo illustrates some of Steve's trademarked techniques, such as pinch harmonics, chromatic build-ups, stringskipping/speedpicking runs, modified pentatonic scales, country/rock fusion licks etc.

Eric Clapton "Layla Unplugged" guitar lesson (3/10 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 3 This solo will probably suit both the beginner as well as the more experienced "shredders" who need to get some phrasing and feel into their playing. Just like the previous SRV solo, this one is filled with inspiring ways of using the trusty pentatonic scale.

Stevie Ray Vaughan "Voodoo chile" guitar lesson (19/9 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 This solo contains sweeps/rakes, double stops, bends, chromatic legato slurs, "outside tones", unorthodox phrasing etc. The whole solo is played in the pentatonic blues box!

Kirk Hammet - Metallica "Fade to Black" guitar lesson (12/9 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 Probably one of the most requested solos ever. The lesson will not be to much of a hassle for the intermediate guitarist, as it does not contain many fast passages. It is a nice introduction to soloing for the beginner, since there are some easy licks to extract.

Marty Friedman "Valley of eternity" guitar lesson (5/9 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2

This lesson will give your rock chops an exotic flavor. The solo deals with some unusual bending and legato phrasing, as well as a bunch of different licks suitable for any level. The techniques you will learn here are artificial harmonics (or pinch harmonics) and pre-bending.

Nuno Bettencourt - Extreme"Rest in Peace" guitar lesson (12/8 - 2005)

Go to part 1 2 3

A very cool solo with maestro guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. The solo is a nice introduction to Nuno's unique sense of rhythm and melody, it also deals with some monster picking and legato, as well as some Steve Vai inspired slides.
Ending Nuno pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix in this ending part of the solo. Technically it is not quite as challenging as the beginning, even though it contains some fast pull-offs.

Yngwie Malmsteen "Far Beyon The Sun" solo
Go to part 1 2 3 4 5

This solo touches upon all that is Yngwie - the unquestionable godfather of "shredguitar" - swept arpeggios, diminished arpeggios, three-note-per-string runs and the harmonic minor scale. A lot of Yngwie's tone comes from his steady, wide and occasionally very fast vibrato.

Scorpions "Wind of Change " solo
Go to part 1 2 3 4 5

Here is a cool solo that's not too fast (suitable for intermediate guitarists) but still yields some cool licks.

Pay attention to the bends and vibrato - and practice this just as seriously as you practice the individual licks. In fact - if you had the choice between great vibrato & bending - and speed, I would definately say go for vibrato & bending!
